"I Can't Do It Right, So Why Bother?"

Exactly twelve months ago, I decided it was time to get serious about my health. I spent hours researching the best workout routines, diets, and fitness tips, determined to start my journey flawlessly. But the day to begin never came, I was stuck, whenever I wanted to start, a voice would tell me, “If you can’t do it perfectly, why bother?”.  I kept postponing my workouts, waiting for the “perfect” moment that never came.

Then, one day, I decided to just start. No perfect plan, no ideal conditions. I began with short, daily walks and simple home workouts. Then I joined a gym and I met the most amazing people. But not all stories went like mine.

Real Stories, Real Progress

Take Francisca, for example. She started her fitness journey with a hundred skips every morning in her compound. No fancy gym membership, no personal trainer. Just her, her rope, and her sneakers.  At first, she felt silly—what if someone comes out in the morning and sees her jumping around?  But over time, a hundred skips turned to five hundred, and five hundred to one thousand. Today, Francisca skips to two thousand without the fear of anybody seeing her, all because she embraced imperfect efforts.

Why Imperfect Efforts Count

1. Consistency Over Perfection

The key to any successful fitness journey is consistency. Imperfect efforts, when done consistently, lead to better results than sporadic, perfect workouts. Your body responds to regular movement and gradually adapts to new challenges, no matter how small they seem at first.

2. Learning Through Mistakes

Each workout, even the ones that feel like failures, teaches you something valuable. Maybe you learn a better way to perform an exercise, discover your body’s limits, or realize what times of day you have the most energy. These lessons are crucial for long-term success.

3. Building Resilience

Facing challenges and overcoming setbacks builds mental toughness. When you push through a tough workout or get back on track after missing a few days, you develop resilience. This mental strength is just as important as physical strength and will keep you going when motivation can’t.

4. Creating Healthy Habits

Starting with imperfect efforts helps you develop healthy habits without the pressure of being perfect. Over time, these small, consistent actions become a natural part of your routine, making it easier to stick with your fitness journey in the long run.

Tips for Embracing Imperfection in Your Fitness Journey

1. Set Realistic Goals

Start with small, achievable goals. Instead of aiming to work out every day, commit to three times a week. Gradually increase the frequency as you build confidence and endurance.

2. Celebrate Small Wins

Acknowledge your progress, no matter how small it seems. Completed a workout despite feeling tired? Celebrate it. Each small win adds up and keeps you motivated.

3. Find Joy in the Process

Choose activities you enjoy. Whether it’s dancing, swimming, or any sport you love, finding joy in the process makes it easier to stay committed and look forward to your workouts.

4. Be Kind to Yourself

Self-compassion is crucial. Recognize that everyone has off days and that perfection is not the goal. Treat yourself with kindness and encourage yourself as you would a friend.

Just Start

The most important step in your fitness journey is the first one. Don’t wait for the perfect moment or the perfect plan. Just start, and let your imperfect efforts lead the way. Remember, every step you take, no matter how small or imperfect, brings you closer to your goals.
